Yesterday the G&L Group came with their machinery and expertise and prepared The Rail Garden for our groundbreaking on Earth Day this Sunday.

It was the first real physical change to the space as a result of months of organization, events and community gatherings.

Walking south through the Monarch Park Tunnel I was greeted with the scent of freshly turned soil and the site of a flattened prepared property. It was, to say the least, cathartic.

Please join us on Sunday for our first community work bee. We will be digging the allotment garden plots, sowing clover and drinking coffee together from 10:00 - 4:00 pm at which point we will be hosting a barbecue for the clean up crews in the neighbourhood and our volunteers.

Thank you for all your support.

Let's Start Digging!

Thanks so much to everyone who came out to our Plant the Seed
fundraiser at the Riverdale Hub. It was an awesome night, and we're
thinking of making this a semi-annual affair! Plant the Seed helped us
raise some money, and now we're excited to dig in the earth together.
That's right: first we offer you some beer and laughs, then we ask you
to do some manual labour.

So now it’s time to break some ground! Come pitch in as we dig some garden beds, build some community, and plant some seeds.

It’s a big job, we need your help! We’ll have three work shifts: 10am-12pm, 12-2pm, and 2-4pm

To sign up for a shift, email therailgarden@gmail.com, write on the Rail Garden’s facebook page, or talk to a committee member.

Workers, please bring a shovel, sturdy shoes, and workgloves. Kids, be prepared to get dirty!

Snacks will be available throughout the day, and we’ll finish off the work bee with a cookout, together with the Gerrard East Community Organization!

Art in the Garden, a set on Flickr.

On April 9th, we held the first of many free kids events at The Rail Garden. Art in the Garden was a HUGE success. The weather was amazing and it felt like the whole neighbourhood showed up to enjoy the weather and the crafts.

This was our unofficial groundbreaking event, we'd like to thank all the children and parents who participated for painting the forms that now decorate the chain link fence.

Thank you to Saplings Nursery for facilitating amazing craft activities and face painting. It was so much fun to see the kids engaged with different ways to plant seeds. Thanks also to The Home Depot at Gerrard Square Mall generously donated the wood for the forms.

We are still planning our official work bee and groundbreaking on April 22nd, Earth Day. If you would like to participate please contact us at therailgarden@gmail.com
